Family recipes

I come from a family of great cooks.  I think they cooked more for necessity than for joy, but the family was always well fed.  As I have evolved into a better cook I have asked for tips from various members of the matriarchy.

My grandmother had many siblings and not a lot of affluence, so I figured she would know how to make do with very little of today’s modern conveniences.  I asked her how to make a pumpkin pie from scratch.  She looked at me as if I had grown two heads and said: “Why the hell would you do that?  Canned pumpkin is cheap, convenient and tasty.”

My mother was once the owner of a small town bakery.  She makes fabulous cakes and breads.  I asked her for her pie crust recipe.  She said: “They sell perfectly good pie crust at the grocery store.  Why bother?”

My grandmother actually disagreed on that one.  For her, pie crust was was worth the bother.  Her secret?  Ice water.  And hardly any of it.
